Relationships - The Demise of Another Marriage
Today in a conversation with Khun Chat, the ethnic Chinese Thai who owns the dormitory across the street, I learned of the break up of the marriage between the Thai farmer and the snake.
Aparently the man's wife, the snake, ran or rather slithered away recently. According to Khun Chat the grieving husband has vowed to wait for his wife's return and will not take another wife.
My understanding is that half of the marriages in America fail. Apparently staying married here in Isaan is just as difficult.
Mr Chat did ask me if I believed in the man and snake marriage. I replied that I did not. He indicated that he thought that the entire situation was a sort of publicity stunt.
On a serious closing note - it is comforting to report that the local mayor and the provincial government have not squandered any time or resources on the issue nor have there been any threats of lawsuits to formalize/legalize these types of unions.
Tolerance creates much less problems than attempting to legislate social acceptance or approval.
